Rodents like rats and mice tend to soil all over the place so if rodents have accessed your home or storage area you’ll see obvious indications of their presence – trails of droppings and chew marks on wiring, food containers, etc. Once they smell a food source they’ll do their best to chew their way in and are most often successful. If your survival food stock includes large buckets of freeze-dried food, you could lose and entire 5 gallon bucket of unopened food if a rat or mouse gets its dirty little paws inside, contaminating the entire bucket or bag.
Rats and mice will return to viable food sources that do not make them sick and they’ll bring friends. Once a rodent finds accessible food in your home, garage, or shed you count on it coming back over and over until the food is gone or no longer accessible. Controlling rodent infestations is a three-fold process involving eliminating access, cleaning up, and trapping rodents in and around the building.
Eliminate all access points larger than about a ¼”. Seal spaces with steel wool, wire mesh, or a similar item that rodents cannot chew through and seal with caulk. Common entry points for rodents include spaces around windows and doors, vents and holes for electrical, plumbing, gas, and cable lines, etc. If you are not in a situation to seal up access points, take care to protect your food stocks as best you can by setting up traps in and around the food supply area as well as keeping food storage areas clean and keeping food containers sealed. Be sure to take care in cleaning rodent droppings. Do your best not to touch the droppings or urine and be sure to dispose of all rodent-related clean up away from food, water sources, and dwelling places.
Trap mice and rats in and around the home or building. If you’ve found evidence of rodents in your home or building there is a good chance they have set up shop and are living, nesting, and reproducing inside your home. In addition to sealing up entry points you’ll need to trap and remove these rodents. Live rat and mouse traps are a safe and humane way to trap multiple rodents for removal. Live mouse and rat traps are effective but can leave you vulnerable to infection from the urine or feces of the trapped mice. Lethal mouse and rat traps kill the rodents immediately by snapping closed when the rodent goes for the bait. Lethal mouse and rat traps like those sold in our online store are easy to set and do not require you to come into contact with the rodent at any time. Protecting you from transmission of disease.
