One of the greatest challenges a prepper will face in the wake of a disaster situation is survival shelter. Your geographic location will have a lot to do with the type of shelter you'll require and exactly what will be neede to survive. Most people can survive the hot summer months by limiting time in the sun and keeping fluid levels up, we don't necessarily need air conditioning. However, the same may not be true of the cold, harsh winter months. Without some form of heat many of us would have a difficult time making through the freezing temperatures that winter can bring. Since most of us live tied to the grid, we need to prepare to heat our shelter in the absence of the grid-based utilities we all utilize daily. Propane heaters are a good short-term remedy to the grid-down that would likely accompany a SHTF scenario as well as the temporary power outages that often occur due to an unexpected or particularly nasty storm.
Benefits of a Propane Heater
Propane space heaters have many benefits that make them a good temporary heat source during an emergency or survival situation.
Size & Mobility
Propane heaters are relatively compact. Not so compact as to be portable in a backpack, for example, but compact in relation to the amount of heat they are capable of supplying. A propane space heater can easily heat a fairly large room while taking up very little space in the room. The relatively small size of the propane heater and the ability to move it around a building are two important factors to consider in a survival situation. Unlike your whole-house heating system, a propane heater can be used in specific areas of a house to maximize run time while minimizing fuel consumption by heating only designated areas rather than the entire building.
Quiet & Clean
Propane heaters are silent which can be a real benefit when you are surviving in close quarters, especially when you need to run the heater for significant periods of time during the coldest winter months. Noisy or otherwise noticeable heating options (like wood fireplace with visible smoke or the telltale hum of a generator) will give away your position. Cold and hungry people in a SHTF situation will target places that appear to be warm and well-stocked. Propane is also a clean energy source, producing low emissions when burned. This makes it a relatively safe option for indoor heating. Bonus - it's better for the environment than other fuel options.
Fast Heating & Economical
Propane space heaters are designed to heat up fast to maximize efficiency. The faster the room can be heated the less time the heater must be running at full capacity. Aside from the fact that your utility based heating system won't be available when the grid goes down, you likely wouldn't want to heat up your whole home anyway in a survival situation. Rather, you'll want to selectively heat only certain areas of the building. A propane space heater allows you to do just that. The amount of heat a propane space heater is capable of giving off is huge relative to its size and propane as a fuel is widely available, easy to store, and relatively inexpensive.
