Most people are unaware of the dangers associated with absorbing radioactive iodine mainly because our body is unable to distinguish between regular iodine and radioactive iodine. As a result we end up absorbing large quantities in the thyroid with disastrous medical consequences. Radioactive iodine is released into the environment during nuclear fission and can contaminate hundreds of thousands of people and can cause long term medical trauma to the body. Consequences of absorbing radioactive iodine released during a meltdown in nuclear reactors and nuclear bombs include birth defects and growth defects, thyroid malfunction and even cancer. Since radioactive iodine is released as an aerosol in the environment during a nuclear disaster, it has the potential to spread hundreds of miles every way increasing the potential and scope of contaminating virtually millions of people. People living in the eastern half of the United States are particularly vulnerable to radioactive iodine poisoning due to the presence of a large number of nuclear reactors on that side of the coast.
Radioactive iodine can either be inhaled through the environment or consumed through contaminated food or water. It is then absorbed by the thyroid due to the inability of the body to distinguish between regular iodine radioactive iodine leading to disastrous far reaching medical consequences.
