When most people go hunting, they are able to quickly field dress any animals they are able to kill, and either take them home or to a processor to be properly butchered. For many people, especially those in survival situations, this is not an option. Being able to properly cure your meat in the field will allow it to last for significantly longer without going bad, which could be life saving. In order to properly preserve meat, you need to act as quickly as possible after a successful hunt. You need to have raw meat either frozen, smoked or dried so that it won’t go bad. During the winter months, it is possible to allow the meat to freeze without […]

If you want to be truly ready for any disaster or emergency situation, you need to make sure you have enough food and water stored away for you and your family to survive on until the disaster is over, or you can establish other sources of food. Depending on your geographic location, the number of people in your family, and other factors, you’ll typically need 3-12 months of food stored up. Some factors to consider are the ages of those in your family, how skilled you are at gathering food from the wild, and things like that. While it may seem overwhelming to try to build up 3-12 months of food for your entire family, it doesn’t have to happen […]
How And Why MRE’s Came To Be
Posted: 31st August 2013 by Michael Levanduski in Emergency Food Supply, food, Food Storage, Survival Food StrategyMeals Ready to Eat, or MREs were first developed for the United States Military in the late 1970’s, with the first pack being delivered in 1981. The military was looking for a solution to the problem of keeping solders fed in virtually any situation. The History of MRE Meals The first version of the MRE’s were given to the 25th Infantry Division in 1981. This division lived on this food for 34 days, consuming nothing but these MRE’s. While the troops rated the […]

Basic Survival Tip: How to Preserve Foods without Electricity and Sun
Posted: 30th September 2012 by Preppers in Food StorageRecently the question was posed to me about preserving foods in a crisis that outlasted the current supply of food stores. This was a survival question that seemed to have a basic answer until there were conditions placed on the preservation methods. I set out to research the problem and was amazed at how out of touch I am with our recent history. Modern refrigeration is… well… exactly that modern! We have not had these luxuries for very long, and prior to the refrigerator, most of our food stores were […]

Solar Dehydrator
Posted: 27th April 2012 by Modern Day Redneck in Canning and Preserving, Food Storage, How To, Making what you need, Survival Food StrategyThis is the new Indirect Solar Dehydrator I finished last week. The windows off to the side collect the heat, the metal plates inside the windows heat up and put out more. There is a screened hole going into the cabinet and a DC fan pulls the heat up and through the Dehydrator. The fan is powered by a small solar panel sitting on top of the Cabinet. I needed the space to dry all the herbs the wife is growing. Then we bottle them and sell the herbs. Pretty cool hu? Thanks for stopping by.

Dutch Oven Cooking with Food Storage Have you ever wondered how you would cook your food storage when there is no gas or electricity for any length of time? There is a real possibility that this could happen. For instance, ice storms that take out power lines for weeks, tornadoes that do the same, earthquakes breaking natural gas and electrical lines, or a virus in the computer system of the power company. Any of these emergencies could happen to us today. Think about it. There’s not always sun to use your solar oven, the barbeque doesn’t bake bread very well, and that camp stove is going to run out of fuel if you have to use it for very long. […]
